Canvas loops for musicians

Overtone

A service that turns a musician's cover art into a Spotify Canvas: the short loop that plays full screen behind a song, every time someone listens. It grew out of AMBR.

The problem

An artist's cover art is a still image, but on Spotify the screen behind a song can move. Most independent artists leave that space empty because a custom loop costs too much and takes too long.

The loops

Each loop starts from the artist's own cover, keeps its look, and repeats on the beat of the track. These were made for independent artists and are shown here silent.

How it works for an artist

  1. 1Send the song and cover
  2. 2Day 1: approve one style frame
  3. 3Day 3: the finished loop, timed to the tempo
  4. 4Checked against the platform spec
  5. 5Ready to upload

Artists with a song already out can ask for a free mock-up first, made within 48 hours.

Brand and explainer

I designed the identity and animated the explainer: off-white, black and one loud orange, so the artists' colours stay the hero.

Explainer frame: Full screen. Every play.
Explainer frame: You approve one frame.
Explainer frame: Spotify, and Apple Music.
Explainer frame: See your cover move, free.

Decisions and trade-offs

  • One approved style frame before any animation, so an artist is never surprised by the result.
  • Loops are locked to the track's tempo, so the repeat lands on the beat instead of jumping.
  • The free mock-up is the whole sales pitch: artists see their own cover move before they pay.
  • Built on AMBR, but sold as a simple service. Artists never see the pipeline, and neither does this page.
